Frequently Asked Questions

Community Benefit Organizations often operate in an urgent or even crisis mode.  As much as you need help, sometimes you seem too busy to even figure out what help you need.  The best thing is to call or arrange a face to face complimentary meeting.  The first step leads to the next.

My Board has never really done a full strategic plan.  What can I expect?

It depends on your needs.  Do you need to put your organization in a community or larger context?  Would input from your clients or stakeholders be critical to the process?  Do you want a general direction facilitated to include a vision, mission, and values?  Do you want an annual operating plan and/or fund development plan included? Generally, an initial complimentary meeting determines what is suitable for your organization.

Our E.D. is leaving.  We need an Interim.  What's involved?

We meet to determine what sort of Interim E.D. you need.  Do you want the organization running with no changes while the Board recruits a new E.D.?  Do you want to assess the organization at the same time to determine the next recruitment needs for an E.D.?   Do you want to begin an organizational change that includes active Board engagement with the next E.D. and want to begin the process with the Interim?  Based on your needs, a contract is negotiated with the Board for a specific timeframe.

We are planning a retreat and need a facilitator. What's involved?

A meeting at a minimum with the Executive Director and preferably also with the Board Chair occurs to plan a general agenda and provide an overview of what you hope to achieve.  After that meeting, I provide a more complete agenda and any materials needed for your approval.  Usually you book the space and arrange food.

Help!  I've never written a large grant.  Can you do it?

If the timeframe for the deadline is reasonable, absolutely.  Generally, a federal grant can take 80 to 100 hours to complete from start to finish, a state and county grant about 60 to 80 hours, a foundation grant (depending upon the size of request and project) a range of 20-40 hours, and a corporate grant ranges from 10-25 hours.

How much do you cost?

I tailor my proposals based on my workload, your needs, the amount of time required, deadlines, and your financial budget and resources..  Charges are typically based on an hourly basis, with mileage included for meetings outside the City of Fresno.  Charging as a total project or to be available on a retainer are options.
